A 35-foot J/105 sailboat, the LEVIATHAN, was struck on its beam by the 37-foot charter fishing boat, the HUNTER, in the Chesapeake Bay. The boats were owned by the Chesapeake Bay Boating Club of Eastport near Annapolis, Maryland and Chesapeake Bay Fishing Charters, respectively.
The Anne Arundel County Fire Department, Maryland Natural Resources Police, and the the U.S. Coast Guard helped separate the boats. The boats collided between Thomas Point Park and Kent Island.
UPDATE: The viral picture above was tweeted by the Maryland Natural Resources Police (MDNRP), whose twitter feed is @MDNRPolice.
That tweet above was believed to by Maryland government work product by many news outlets which is in the public domain and was featured in several print and TV outlets including the Washington Post, Fox 5, WBAL NBC11 , the Capital Gazzette, and Slow Boat Sailing as from the MDNRP.
Slow Boat Sailing was contacted by one of its newsletter subscribers on Sunday who said his wife took the photo on the left of the tweet on Friday, August 17, 2018. The Slow Boat Sailing newsletter subscriber said he and his wife stood by until rescuers arrived and were on seen before the MDNRP and the USCG. Slow Boat Sailing confirmed his wife did post the photo on a closed Facebook group minutes after the accident and hours before the @MDNRPolice tweet. On Monday, we contacted the MDNRP and they said the left photo in the tweet was from the Anne Arundel County Fire Department. The Anne Arundel County Fire Department’s Captain Russ Davies told Slow Boat Sailing over the phone that they had taken the picture from the social media post of a “Good Samaritan.”
The Good Samaritan gave us permission to use the photo and expressed his wish that neither he nor his wife be credited. We believe the Public Information Offices at MDNRP and the Anne Arundel County Fire Department have acted inappropriately in distributing that photo and have misled many news outlets and the public about its origin.
Interestingly, that subscriber did want to confirm to Slow Boat Sailing that the fishing boat the Hunter did not have its fishing lines out at the time of the collision. That is one more piece of evidence that may indicate that the powerboat should have gave way in the accident.
