Beautiful Sailboat Sunk & Raised in Lyme CT, SV Mazu Goes Viral after Frank Dinardi Drone Video

A beautiful 53-foot sailboat sunk in January and was raised on February 20, 2019, in Old Lyme, CT. No one was aboard.  After the epic, viral drone footage of the SV Mazu in Old Lyme, CT by Frank DiNardi, this boat’s sinking became a national news story.

We liked the Hartford Courant article:
“Sunken luxury yacht in Lyme raised and towed to area marina for repairs” by GREGORY B. HLADKY

Thumbblue16by9

https://www.courant.com/news/connecticut/hc-news-raising-luxury-boat-20190220-yr4eq6n6jjh6xbktcbkorgd4zy-story.html
No fuel spilled into the water. That article writes that it was refloated by “Sea Tow Central Connecticut of Old Saybrook and Shoreline Diving Services CT of Coventry. The vessel was towed to Chester Point Marina.” The Courant goes on to write, “The expensive boat is named ‘Mazu’ and is owned by Lyme residents Gilead and Maureen Johnson. It was moored all winter in Hamburg Cove where the Eight Mile River enters the Connecticut River.”

We used the public domain USCG photos. Below is their press release:

“Pollution responders from U.S. Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound oversee salvage operation of a sunken 53-foot sailboat in the Connecticut River in Old Lyme, Conn., Feb. 20, 2019. The sailboat was re-floated by a commercial salvage company utilizing float bags and dewatering pumps. (Photo courtesy of U.S. Coast Guard)

Sailing a DINGHY to SIBERIA, John Martin’s Walker Bay OCEAN crossing

John Martin III sailed across the frigid Bering Sea in a 8-foot Walker Bay sailing dinghy. He landed in Siberia after 14 days at sea when wild currents pushed him wildly off course. He planned to sneak into China after sailing down the Yukon River. First he sailed the Tanana River. He departed his native Anchorage, Alaska in the tiny rowing sailboat. He worked his way up the rivers to the Yukon before departing for his wife and son in China. Martin lacked a passport because of his past brushes with the law. He was forced to land in Siberia to avoid being sucked into the Arctic Ocean. After a dangerous beach landing in Lavrentiya in the remote Chukotka region of Russia on August 1, 2018, after 14 days he was detained by Russian authorities for several months before being deported back to his native Alaska. That is where he gave this exclusive interview to Slow Boat Sailing. Photos of his trip were reproduced with John Martin’s webpage http://www.nooceantoowide.com. He plans to write a book of his story.

“GPS IS GREAT :)” tweets 2nd Place GGR 2018 Finisher Mark Slats

Dutch solo-sailor Mark Slats puts in a dig into the Golden Globe Race 2018’s retro-sailing rules as he leaves Les Sables D’lonne for the first time since he finished his 214 days at sea. His first tweet read, “PRETTY GOOD SAILIG PLENTY WATER AND FOOD AND GPS IS GREAT” Slats is sailing his Rustler 36 Ophen Maverick to his home of the Netherlands by way of England.

The 2018 Golden Globe Race bans the use of GPS and satellite communications. Slats told Slow Boat Sailing in an interview, which is yet to be released, that he was upset about the 32-hour time penalty that pushed his finish time back to 216 days. He felt his manager was well within his rights to give the satellite phone weather warning under race rules. Slats also said he felt the penalty was disproportionate compared to the 18-hour penalties imposed on Jean-Luc Van Den Heede, who won the race in 212 days, and fourth place Istavan Kopar who is over 2,000 nm from the finish.

The use of banned Spectra braid by Van Den Heede to repair his shroud, the receipt of GPS positions by race participants, the allegedly illegal use of HAM radio by Van Den Heede and Slats, the satellite phone use violations, and the accusation that Van Den Heede received banned weather routing, have dogged the retro race. The race prides itself on using technology from 1968, the first running of the solo, non-stop unassisted race. With the exception of satellite phone infraction the race chairman and founder, Don McIntyre, has dismissed accusations of “cheating” as nonsense.

Eighteen boats started the race on July 1, 2018. After 227 days, five boats have been dismasted, eight boats retired for other reasons, two boats have finished, and three more are in the Atlantic Ocean sailing to France. The closest skipper in 3rd place is Uku Randamaa was 2,500 nm from the finish at UTC 16:00 on February 13, 2019.

Yacht wrecked in Mallorca; Sila Sibri sailboat hits the beach in Palma, Spain

The 105-foot (32-meter) super sailing yacht Sila Sibri hit the rocky beach in Mallorca in rough weather on October 15, 2018. See pictures and hear the story of this sailboat disaster. The Sila Sibri was bought in February 2017 after being listed for $1.6 million. Originally called the SV Kestral, it was a Ron Holland designed 12-cabin two-masted sailboat. It had 8 guest cabins and 4 crew cabins. It had a 350 HP engine.
The Russian construction magnet Valery Kokorin who has represented Omsk, Siberia owned it. A double circumnavigation around Antartica was planned before it his the rocks. It is not clear why its crew lost control of the vessel in rough conditions in Palma, Mallorca, Spain in the Mediterranean.

The Downwind Run to Pape’ete | Sailing to Tahiti to Meet Janna and Sophie S2E19

Anna, Daly, and Linus sail offshore on the downwind run to Papeete, Tahiti on their last passage of the season. In Tahiti Captain Linus is met by his wife and daughter Janna who flew in from Louisiana.

Anna and Linus go through the North Pass of Fakarava atoll in the Tuamotos Archipelago of French Polynesia. Linus debates anchoring at Venus Point, mooring at Le Yacht Club de Tahiti, mooring or docking at Marina Taina in Punaauia Tahiti, or the Papeete Marina. They end up docking in the Papeete Marina.

Anna departs the boat and Linus picks up Sophie and Janna at PPT, the Papeete Airport after their trip is delayed. Linus struggles to find a bus in downtown Papeete near the Mairie de Pape’ete (town hall). He eventually gets a cab a the taxi stand near Jungle Coffee. Linus rents a car from EcoCar near the Tahiti Airport Hotel.

Janna, Sophie, and Linus go on several sight seeing trips. They visit Tahiti’s southern coast in Mataiea, and see the waterfall and trails in the Vaipahi Water Gardens. They tour the Museum of Tahiti and the Islands (Musée de Tahiti et des Îles, Tahitian Te Fare Manaha) in Punaauia where they see the anchor from one of Captain Cook’s ships. They tour the Arahurahu Marae in Paea which was the largest marae in Tahiti and the site of a Heiva dance celebration.

Find out how JLVDH did it from the start to finish of the toughest race in sailing, the GGR2018. Eighteen sailors got to the start line, but only five remained by day 212 of the fiftieth anniversary GGR 2018. Van Den Heede led most of the way as Are Wiig, Abhilash Tomy, Gregor McGucken, Loic Lepage, and Susie Goodall’s sailboats were dismasted. This retro race for 32-to-36-foot sailboats runs through the stormy Southern Ocean and even Van Den Heede could not escape unscathed. His boat was pitchpoled a few thousand miles from Cape Horn and he contemplated dropping out. His shrouds were damaged endangering his mast. Vandenheede was able to enact a repair and sailed on more slowly allowing Dutch sailor Mark Slats to almost catch him south of the Azores High. A tactical misstep of motoring though the center of the high instead of sailing more quickly to its west cost Slats any chance of taking the lead short of disaster as Van Den Heede stretched his lead to over 400 nm. This video features commentary from Sunday Time’s 1968 race winner English sailor Sir Robin Knox-Johnston who was the only finisher of the original race in 312 days. Van Den Heede says he was inspired by his contemporary sailor Bernard Moitessier. Jean-Luc Van Den Head was the oldest entrant in the 2018 GGR. The race is his 6th circumnavigation of the Globe. Besides holding the GGR race record Van Den Heed still holds the record for the fastest east to west solo-circumnavigation of the globe. His 36-foot Rustler yacht is named Matmut after his main sponsor.

Video from VNR/PPL/GGR and Mark Slats was reproduced with the permission of the GGR 2018.
