Since starting the podcast and YouTube channel we have had to upgrade our cameras, computer hard drives, and audio equipment. Podcasts must pay hosting fees. We have incurred high internet access fees in foreign countries to put out a regular podcast and to upload videos. For every hour of podcast or minute of video many hours of work must go into them to produce them. We only produce highly edited podcasts and videos because we believe our listeners and viewers time is so valuable.

We make content that is for all audiences and will not sacrifice safety or our relationship with our loved ones to create suggestive thumbnails. Our crew wears life jackets and harnesses in all weather. We don’t cut corners on crew safety to get exciting video.

The vlog is also a video cruising guide of the places we visit focused on the seamanship necessary to visit the exotic foreign ports that we visit. The vlogs recount the adventures of the Slow Boat Crew.

S1E9: Sailing Offshore to Panama, Shelter Bay Marina, #PanamaCanal, and Checking in Colon, Panama

You will see Linus and Stevie go offshore for the last time together. You will see them pick up anchor in the remote island of Providencia, Colombia to sail two days non-stop to Colon, Panama 250 nautical miles away.

The Slow Boat hits light winds, and they have engine problems 50 miles from the entrance to the Panama Canal. Linus has a spare fresh water pump and replaces the part and they are soon motoring past container ships at the entrance to the Panama Canal on the Caribbean Sea side, Colon Panama.

They tie up at the only marina at the entrance to the Panama Canal on the Atlantic Ocean side. While the marina is well marked, there are rocks near some buoys. They tour Shelter Bay with its workout facilities, dry storage yard, pool, restaurant and bar, and library.

They try to check in to the country in downtown Colon, which is across the Panama Canal from Shelter Bay Marina. There is a free marina bus but the ride is 30-60 minutes into town depending on the traffic, ferry schedule, or bridge openings over the Gatun Locks of the Panama Canal. The bus stops at the Quatros Altos mall but also drops passengers in downtown Colon.

Stevie and Linus get their 72-hour visas at the cruise ship terminal, but are rebuffed by the Cristobal Port Captain and the Immigration office in the Colon 2000 mall. Stevie leaves the boat and the country to avoid paying the $105 “mariners’ visa”.

Linus returns to Colon, Panama to finish the check in process and get a 90-day mariner’s visa, but refuses to pay an extra $50 “captain’s fee” that he thinks is bogus.

In the Red: Some new camera and recording gear for season 2 and year 2 of the podcast

Besides giving away $1,500 worth of books last month as part of hitting our old $20 
http://www.Patreon.com/slowboatsailing goal, the podcast and video series has had to incur a lot of costs.
In Season 1, Episode 1, I lost my iPhone which we film with. That was about $900+ to replace. Because of the filming, I got one with a 128GB hard drive ($200 more), which is always maxed out from the videos despite frequent backups and deleting.
We have bought external hard drives and a new laptop computer since the audio and video files maxed out the capabilites of the hard drive and the processor. We got three GoPro knock offs and lots of GoPro attachments. We purchased several HDMI storage cards. New selfie sticks and tripods add to the pile of camera gear we purchased for season 1. In total, I would guess the gear, hosting, and extra internet expenses abroad exceeded $1,000. When I do our financials, I’ll probably have hard numbers.
We also pay monthly hosting for the website and the podcast. 
Through January 2017, we have earned about $150 from Patreon. Obviously, the vlog and podcast are badly in the red.
Below is some new filming and podcast gear that I purchased today. I get no money from these links. Amazon is in a dispute with Louisiana about sales taxes, and I could not set up an Amazon store if I wanted to.
The content does not pay for itself in direct costs of providing podcasts or video. I get no payment for my time. I give away books which I could otherwise sell. If the costs don’t cover the costs of hosting, camera and recording gear, hard drives, podcast and website hosting, I am volunteering my money to produce content that takes a lot of my time. I can think of many better charities than the folks watching sailing videos or listening to podcasts. The demographics of my listeners and watchers are people that can mostly afford to pay for the content they consume.
That being said, I am planning on giving away berths for free that are worth many times I will collect in Patreon pledges. This is similar to my giving away 10 times more books in dollar terms than I collected in pledges. It is a tremendous value being a Patron and the rewards outweigh the pledges.

Sailing in Providencia, Colombia, Hiking El Pico, Snorkeling Crab Cay, and Morgan’s Head S1E678

This is the directors cut of the combination of episodes S1E6, S1E7, and S1E8 of the round the world vlog. The Slow Boat sails from Cayo Largo, Cuba across the Caribbean Sea to the remote island of Providencia, Colombia, a.k.a. Old Providence. Electrical sparks on the lifelines endangers the boat on the crossing. We face the legend of the pirate and privateer Captain Morgan as we enter the harbor. In this video cruising guide, we show why Providencia is a cruiser’s paradise with all the essentials within close walking distance of the dinghy landing. Free WIFI, several grocery stores, two ATMs, and many other essentials are a few steps from the dock. We show how to check in, get water, and get fuel. Stevie visits the airport. Linus fixes the generator and puts up a new board used to secure the fuel cans.

Stevie and I leave the boat to hike up the highest mountain in Providencia, Colombia, a.k.a. Old Providence. To our surprise we found a well marked and maintained trail. It was as high quality as you would find as in any U.S. national park, but we only saw one other couple hiking the trail. Compare that to the 1,000s that hike Diamondhead in Oahu every day. The views at the top of El Pico in Providencia, “The Peak’, were magnificient. You must do this hike if you visit! If you can walk a 5K, you should be up for this challenge. Just take lots of water!

The El Pico, “The Peak”, hike begins is in the Bottom House neighborhood of Providencia. It is almost on the opposite side of the town and ferry dock.

It probably takes about two hours up and one hour down. Give yourself plenty of daylight. (You could kill yourself in the dark.) There is no guard rail at the end and the path is narrow. We did not have a guide and I don’t think one is necessary. It is better to hike it when its dry otherwise the path will be muddy.

In this episode the Slow Boat crew, Stevie and Linus, visit the best snorkeling spots in Providencia, Colombia, in the Caribbean Sea. They visit Crab Cay (part of Old Providence McBean Lagoon national part) by dinghy and hike and dinghy out to Morgan’s Head on Santa Catalina island to see the real pirate treasure, an unspoiled reef close to shore. There is a pedestrian bridge connecting Santa Catalina island to the main town in Providencia. Linus also visits the ruins of Ft. Warwick. Both Morgan’s Head and Ft. Warwick are a short hike from the town in Providencia and are accessible by a pedestrian bridge. Both spots are no fishing zones.

Associate and Senior Associate Producer Credits for Captain and Admiral Patrons and Vlog Episode Release Schedule

We are adding the associate and senior associate producer credits beginning in episode 9 (our first episode in Panama) for captain and admiral level patrons of the podcast and vlog. Episode 9, “S1E9: Offshore to Panama, Shelter Bay, and the Bizzare Check-In Process in Colon”. We will release that episode on Thursday, February 2. In that episode, we say “Goodbye” to Stevie who crewed since episode 0.
 
We are going to have a release date for the vlog episodes on the first Thursday of the month at 5PM New York City time.
Season 1, will have three episodes in Panama and conclude with episode 12 in Ecuador. Season 2, should begin in June with the beginning of the Pacific Crossing to the Marquesas.

In this episode the Slow Boat crew, Stevie and Linus, visit the best snorkeling spots in Providencia, Colombia, in the Caribbean Sea. They visit Crab Cay (part of Old Providence McBean Lagoon national part) by dinghy and hike and dinghy out to Morgan’s Head on Santa Catalina island to see the real pirate treasure, an unspoiled reef close to shore. There is a pedestrian bridge connecting Santa Catalina island to the main town in Providencia. Linus also visits the ruins of Ft. Warwick. Both Morgan’s Head and Ft. Warwick are a short hike from the town in Providencia and are accessible by a pedestrian bridge. Both spots are no fishing zones.
